The Danish Red Cross is working with a technology company backed by a Syrian refugee to transfer humanitarian aid into Syria using Bitcoin.
Yeah, you read that correctly. We’re doing this.
Look, today’s humanitarian aid model is more dependent on financial intermediaries than ever before. Even in the simplest payment scenario, there’s a bank; a coordination network; the aid recipient’s bank; and a telecom provider. But often, there are even more middlemen, with money moving along complex chains of third parties. If one segment of the value chain is disrupted or encumbered, lifesaving humanitarian assistance is blocked from reaching its final destination.
Blockchain and distributed ledger technology allow humanitarian organizations, like the DRC, to take control of the funding process to ensure programs, interventions, and staff receive financial support without excessive fees and delays.
